School Description

Mission Statement: May Werthan Shayne Elementary School offers a positive and diverse community environment that strives for excellence through high academic and social and emotional expectations for both students and staff.

Shayne Elementary offers a safe and nurturing environment for Prek through 4th grade children. Our teaching and learning is guided by our use of state of TN academic standards and the MNPS district scope and sequence, curriculum and resources. Students also experience opportunities to grow socially through our focus on social and emotional learning as part of our goal to teach and nurture the whole child.

Teachers emphasize the importance of Reading and Mathematics and strive to instill a joy of learning in each student as part of the learning process. Reading Language Arts is taught using complex text along with other research-based methods that include foundational skills for basic reading and comprehension strategies. Students are encouraged to read, think, talk and write about what they are thinking, reading and learning. Social Studies and Science content and text are often integrated into the reading scope and plan. Teachers also use data to inform ongoing planning and instructional shifts. Mathematics instruction includes opportunities for direct instruction and discovery methods for students to create their own learning and pathways of thinking about the numbers. Number sense is our focus in early grades and that knowledge is built upon and accessed in later grades to think, discuss, explain and understand how to apply and make sense of numbers in real-life applications.

Parents are a vital part of their child's learning experience and at M.W. Shayne we welcome parents and expect them to partner with teachers, the school, the community and our PTA. Parents are encouraged to join our very vital PTA to stay informed and help build our school community.
